Chapter Eleven

Jessie and Shane’s new home was gorgeous. It was beyond gorgeous, really, and I couldn’t be happier for my friend. She’d spent her whole life working harder than almost anyone else I knew to raise her twins and keep her diner afloat after her no-good ex-husband basically left her with nothing. Not that his leaving was a real loss. Barrett had always been a loser. Still, it hadn’t been easy for Jessie, and it made me happier than I could express to see her thriving now that she and Shane had found each other.

“This house is incredible, Jessie.” I hugged her tight and handed her the bottle of wine I’d brought.

“Thank you. I can’t believe you haven’t been here yet.”

I could. I’d been so busy working. As usual, work had consumed all of my time. Until lately. More and more, I was reconsidering my workaholic ways. Maybe I’d been wrong all these years about the value of putting work first.

“Where’s Trent?” Jessie’s question jerked me from my thoughts. “Didn’t you come together?”

I stiffened. “Why would we do that?”

I knew exactly why we would do that. And that’s exactly why I’d insisted that we didn’t. Every time I spent time with Trent, it felt a little easier. A little better. And it wasn’t just the sex, although that was also getting better and better, if it were even possible. But it was more than that, and that scared the hell out of me. Nothing about what we were doing was supposed to be serious, and it was definitely not supposed to be permanent. Exactly the opposite, in fact.

Jessie tilted her head and narrowed her eyes at me. “I thought you guys were together?”

“Who’s together?” Abby and Sandy entered the kitchen. There was a flurry of hugs and greetings before Abby returned to the question, much to my disappointment. “So,” she said. “Who’s together?”

“Trent and Brittany.”

“I told you.” I stopped Jessie. “We’re not together.”

“You’re not?” Sandy looked taken aback. “Did you not just tell us about some crazy-hot sex in an elevator? I mean, I don’t even know if I’ll be able to look him in the eyes after hearing that story.” She blushed, and I looked to Abby for support.

“It’s just sex,” I said. “You said it yourself, right?”

Abby’s face was carefully neutral.

“Just go have fun, let go a little and…casual, right?”

“I don’t know if I said that.”

I wanted to scream with frustration, but the girls laughed.

“Sorry,” Jessie said. “I honestly did think you guys were together. I mean, you’re sure spending a lot of time together.”

“We’re having a lot of super-hot sex,” I fired back. “That’s it. There’s nothing else going on.”

I made my point and swallowed hard, because even as I said it, it didn’t feel right. There was no way I was going to admit it, at least not out loud, but there was something else going on with Trent and me. Something I didn’t fully understand, and it definitely wasn’t something I’d ever experienced. It was a closeness I’d only ever had with my girlfriends before.
