Chapter Eleven
Jessie and Shaneâs new home was gorgeous. It was beyond gorgeous, really, and I couldnât be happier for my friend. Sheâd spent her whole life working harder than almost anyone else I knew to raise her twins and keep her diner afloat after her no-good ex-husband basically left her with nothing. Not that his leaving was a real loss. Barrett had always been a loser. Still, it hadnât been easy for Jessie, and it made me happier than I could express to see her thriving now that she and Shane had found each other.
âThis house is incredible, Jessie.â I hugged her tight and handed her the bottle of wine Iâd brought.
âThank you. I canât believe you havenât been here yet.â
I could. Iâd been so busy working. As usual, work had consumed all of my time. Until lately. More and more, I was reconsidering my workaholic ways. Maybe Iâd been wrong all these years about the value of putting work first.
âWhereâs Trent?â Jessieâs question jerked me from my thoughts. âDidnât you come together?â
I stiffened. âWhy would we do that?â
I knew exactly why we would do that. And thatâs exactly why Iâd insisted that we didnât. Every time I spent time with Trent, it felt a little easier. A little better. And it wasnât just the sex, although that was also getting better and better, if it were even possible. But it was more than that, and that scared the hell out of me. Nothing about what we were doing was supposed to be serious, and it was definitely not supposed to be permanent. Exactly the opposite, in fact.
Jessie tilted her head and narrowed her eyes at me. âI thought you guys were together?â
âWhoâs together?â Abby and Sandy entered the kitchen. There was a flurry of hugs and greetings before Abby returned to the question, much to my disappointment. âSo,â she said. âWhoâs together?â
âTrent and Brittany.â
âI told you.â I stopped Jessie. âWeâre not together.â
âYouâre not?â Sandy looked taken aback. âDid you not just tell us about some crazy-hot sex in an elevator? I mean, I donât even know if Iâll be able to look him in the eyes after hearing that story.â She blushed, and I looked to Abby for support.
âItâs just sex,â I said. âYou said it yourself, right?â
Abbyâs face was carefully neutral.
âJust go have fun, let go a little andâ¦casual, right?â
âI donât know if I said that.â
I wanted to scream with frustration, but the girls laughed.
âSorry,â Jessie said. âI honestly did think you guys were together. I mean, youâre sure spending a lot of time together.â
âWeâre having a lot of super-hot sex,â I fired back. âThatâs it. Thereâs nothing else going on.â
I made my point and swallowed hard, because even as I said it, it didnât feel right. There was no way I was going to admit it, at least not out loud, but there was something else going on with Trent and me. Something I didnât fully understand, and it definitely wasnât something Iâd ever experienced. It was a closeness Iâd only ever had with my girlfriends before.
